Human beings have been handling this concept ever since ancient Greeks. Meanwhile, the world has changed a lot as well as its inhabitants. But have we interpreted it as a government of a society performed by people, or for people? Is it the same? I’m convinced that government “by the people” and “for the people” may lead, in some cases, to inconsistencies and incompatibilities when we try to keep both goals as strategic ones. The first aspect “by the people” may be seen as a structural one. It’s very similar to system controllability problems, deeply studied and an important part of the modern control theory. The second one “for the people” has to do with goals, or in terms of optimization; with the object function. Most wish others welfare; but here, a problem arises, when we try to define the word “people” as a set. Even if we apply recent math theories, like fuzzy mathematics, there will be difficulties in considering any citizen as belonging to a set of “people”, or, if we consider as such just those who have no certain privileges belonging to that set. In developed societies, the pyramidal shape of privilege distribution makes it clear that justice administration must be careful to avoid that citizens at the base will not be abused. Also, in the base there is the major part of the votes, so if the people at the base are prepared both intellectually and spiritually to make a good decision, then the system will work. In conclusion; industrialized societies must take care that every citizen has the opportunity to give his or her children an adequate education and spiritual formation; if not, the system may fail. The case of many underdeveloped countries, especially those under dictatorships, is very different. In the best of cases, the fact that they have elections or voting processes defines them a democracy, even if they are fraudulent ones. Often, the will of the majority is not translated into changes. Citizens are continuously cheated by governors. This way, each generation’s intellectual and spiritual condition, declines over time, and therefore, is more likely to be abused and deceived. It’s a small world, and
sooner or later, the problems of others will affect everybody. It’s
important that people form developed countries help stop the deterioration
of some third world societies. |
